Metochites, Theodore

Metochites, Theodore
Scholar and statesman during the reign of Andronikos II (q.v.). When he came to the attention of the emperor (q.v.) he had already authored a number of philosophical, scientific, and literary works. In 1298 he negotiated arrangements for the marriage of Simonis to Stefan Urosh II Milutin (qq.v.), and the accompanying peace treaty with Serbia (q.v.). The abdication of Andronikos II ended the career of Metochites. He spent his remaining years in the Chora monastery in Constantinople (qq.v.), which he restored magnificently and which contains the donor-portrait of him in mosaic (q.v.); he is portrayed in an elaborate gold and white turban, kneeling before Christ, to whom he offers a model of the restored church.
